Some favorites from the year

Submitted by Simon on Mon, 12/31/2007 - 1:48pm

Althouse is doing her annual summary of her favorite self-penned posts, so now seemed a good time to get all self-indulgent and do the same. So: looking back, here's some of the posts from the last year that I think are among my better efforts.

JANUARY
The Earth is Round, Death and Taxes Still Exist, and Hillary is Running for President | Who fired first? Who has to fire last? | Secession and the Constitution

FEBRUARY
"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good | Did Rehnquist push O'Connor out? It Seems Unlikely | Don't Ask, don't Tell, Don't Take Responsibility | Obambi's New Logo | Where the Rubber Meets the Road: the Intersection of Law and Morality at the FedSoc Student Symposium

MARCH
Rudy on Judges III | Greenhouse vs. Greenburg | This is a bipartisan war | Is it legal? Yes. | A serious question for global warming proponents

APRIL
The Yes-Man is promoted over the Yeoman | Waiving Federalism | Reactions to Carhart IV

MAY
Developing an idea | Posner vs. Stone | On Heroes | Ledbetter v. Goodyear

JUNE
Louisiana v. Kennedy | The Katrina litigation | Irony | Treaty construction

JULY
Lamppost Journalism | Hugo Black, Incorporation, and some various notes in response to Prof. Amar

AUGUST
WaPo on the Ledbetter Act | Sub Nomine Curiae | An open letter to Congressional Candidates about federalism and limited government

SEPTEMBER:
Neutral Principles and some Electoral College Problems | About Ron Paul | Legalese | Back to Foreign Law | Fiat Lux | The California proposal and legislative exclusivity under the federal Constitution

OCTOBER
Food for Thought | Breaking the Law, redux | Who can sign | Is there some value to Hillary winning, in this sense?

NOVEMBER:
Acting departmen heads | Recess appointments | ADA and allergies | Filibusters

DECEMBER
More thoughts on the Wisconsin Amendment challenge | New toy

I'd really have liked to be able to include my Constitution Day post Counterrevolutionaries in Robes: Why Originalist Courts are Right for America, but I was unsatisfied it when it was published, feeling that I'd run out of steam and out of time, and looking at it again with fresh eyes, I still get the same feeling, that it's got some good points but it feels like an unfinished draft. Can't win 'em all. I also can't include in the list above this post, because it merely linked to something I thought was really neat, but I do urge anyone who got an Ipod for Christmas to click through and download.

Favorite self-penned one-liner of the year? Responding to headline "[Anthony] Kennedy May Be Key to Abortion Limits": "Sun may be key to life on Earth." Given that we have a general audience here, my hope is that my writing about legal topics has become a little more concise and accessible (at least in the context of writing about particular cases) - comparing earlier writing like this post about IBEW Local 21 v. Illinois Bell Tel. Co. (and to some extent this post about Leonard v. Nationwide Mutual Ins. Co.) with later posts about United States v. Are and United States v. Manneh, or this post sumarizing some then-recent cases that caught my eye, I think that's so.

Lots of Reading!

Lots of your stuff to read before I head off to law school in a few days. Thanks for the "best of Simon" list.

Incidentally, I first "met" you via Ledbetter postings. Glad to see that one on the list. :)
