Still side-lined, but we need an open thread!
Here's some more Obama-patented HopeChange® for you:
The law enforcement officials involved, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, and Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, are all elected Democratic officials and Obama supporters.
Glenn Reynolds has a link roundup on this latest Obamessiah attempt to use government to strong-arm critics into silence. Is this the HopeChange® you were looking for?
UPDATE:
Gov. Blunt Statement on Obama Campaign’s Abusive Use of Missouri Law Enforcement
“St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.
“What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.
“This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.
“Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society.”
--Missouri Governor Matt Blunt
Welcome to HopeChange® for America!
UPDATE: Here's the one ad Obama wants people criminally prosecuted for airing, and really doesn't want you to see:
And here's the other:
eagles
The Eagles of Death Metal have a new album out soon. They've just started a tour. These guys are the proto-punk guilty pleasure of the DECADE.
Tully, where you been, maybe helping out down in TX? It's raining like an MF up here today, but nothing what like what the poor folks in Texas got.
So, who's up for the foreign policy debate tonight? I sure hope the next admin's foreign policy doctrine isn't reduced to "beg for money."

crock of creamed corn
It was this crock of creamed corn that got me so steamed. Didn't Reid try to pull this with "the Path to 9/11?" If these actions are true, Dems are truly no different than Republicans.

If these actions are true, Dems are truly no different than Republicans.
I can't recall the GOP ever overtly enlisting law enforcement for such despicable campaign purposes. Certainly not in my adult lifetime, and I'm an old guy (well, around here anyway).
The left is real good about crying "Fascist!" at the drop of a pin. Funny how I haven't heard them objecting to this. And where's the ACLU? A deafening silence.

Hehehehe, gotta love it!
*Yes, really, Simon's wife. Envy or pity me. ;)
There' s a slight problem
He was considered an idiot by his own party (Lincoln Reconsidered by David P. Davis)
He got the US involved in a Civil War with 650,000 casualities
The North hated him
The South hated him
He aged 20 years inside of 5
His wife developed mental illness
His children died
He was the victim of 6 assassination attempts with the seventh being sucessful
He developed depression
and most of all
he was respected only years after he died
I'm not trying to offend, but it's kinda creepy when people use this as a reason to select Obama. Do you really want him to go through something like this? Heck I don't want *any* president to go through this!!

Just one quibble, on the
Just one quibble, on the depression angle- a lot of experts believe that he suffered from manic depression or bipolar disorder, so that's not the same as developing depression due to external circumstances. Bipolar individuals often do extraordinary things but then they also often suffer the downside, depression, as the opposite pole to their manic highs when they experience bursts of creativity, heightened intellect, and extremely high energy.
OOOOhhhhhh
learn something new everyday.
My main angle is to be a good president, usually one must go through hell and be spat on. Whether W is in that place has yet to be determined (despite what historians tell you. I have a MA in history and we're supposed to wait awhile for judgement. We get paid for hindsight ;) But look at Lincoln, Hoover (i'm weird, I know), FDR, LBJ (told you I'm weird).
Lincoln is worshipped today - there's a virtual temple in DC. But when he was alive he was demonized. I was shocked myself to read it in "Lincoln Reconsidered"; I guess that's why it's one of my favorite history books.
Rachel

Well, the bipolar thing is
Well, the bipolar thing is just conjecture as I don't think it was very well understood in his time- but I think the govt agency SAMHSA used him as a poster example a while back of a famous person who probably suffered from it. There are a lot of other historical figures, including Churchill, Dickens, and Isaac Newton, who also had characteristics which strongly suggest bipolar.
Lincoln Reconsidered sounds like one to put on my 'to read' list.
Interesting. I'm an spiring writer myself, and I've always been
a history buff. The thing is, while I still think the final verdict on Bush will be one of missed opportunities, stubbornness to a afault, among other things (I'll be polite), I do think he should always get credit for the decision to finally remove Saddam, and if the gains in Iraq hold, he'll net a large chunk of the credit for its success, and that's fair, although he will still have to take the blame for the failures, but there you have it.
Of course, it's entirely possible that I could be totally wrong, and he could end up being totally vindicated like Truman, but I find that highly unlikely.

30 years
I don't know. Truman was vindicated about 30 years after he left with a 23% approval rating, starting the nuke race, and getting us involved in a war that cost 30,000+ lives in the span of 37 months five years after WWII. *And* we ended up the same place we started (38th parallel). So if *he* can get vindicated, I guess anyone can.
But then again, I think LBJ was a good president. Despite his temper and pants problems

Hold on a second, what exactly are Obama's crew of sheriffs and
prosecutors going to do? Are they just going to be there to set the record straight, or something else? I don't like thinking this way, but the way the whole thing was described sounds like something lifted right out of Orwell. What happens if you run a misleading ad? Man, I hope I'm just overreacting here.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Rafique, it's the same pattern
what exactly are Obama's crew of sheriffs and prosecutors going to do? Are they just going to be there to set the record straight, or something else?
Rafique, it's the same pattern as seen before only more so. First, the not-quite-directly threatening letters from Obama's lawyers to stations airing the ads. Then the campaign fielding "grassroots" (astroturf) pressure on stations from their in-house True Believer wingbot brigades. Then the Obama campaign's demand that government agencies criminally prosecute those exercising their First Amendment rights to political speech that Obama doesn't like.
The DoJ officially declined to act as brown-shirt surrogates last round, so now the Obama campaign is asking state and local officials to do the dirty work for them. And some of those (see updated post) are indicating their willingness to play ball. MiniTrue lives. I can just imagine how an Obama admin would handle dissent.
Yeah, I like Obama, but this growing trend of using state power
to silence critics is disquieting, to put it mildly. I take the NRa and AIP ads with a grain of salt of course, but the rule when people smear you is to correct the record, not to use the government, and vague ethics and election laws to shut them up. The NRA casts Obama as a foe of liberty. Kinda hard to prove them wrong when you try to hamper their free speech rights. Just sayin'.
Not to mention that Obama's strategy predictably backfired, as more people will see the ads.

Drinking game!
I obviously didn't start drinking soon enough re: this debate...
Anyone know of a drinking game, or do I need to post my ideas?
*Yes, really, Simon's wife. Envy or pity me. ;)
A bit late for the drinking game this time, but as for the
debate itself, I'm calling it a win for Obama on the economic issues, and a slight win for McCain on the foreign policy. Obama got caught on the Iran question, and McCain nailed him on the surge. I thought Obama handled himself well everywhere else though, and there were no major gaffes.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Obama got caught on Pakistan
Obama got caught on Pakistan but the Press will take a day or two to fathom that...LOL. Obama reversed himself on missile defense so I think he clearly lost the foreign policy argument. Pakistan was a big point as Obama tried to link Afghanistan to Iraq whereas McCain was right in linking problems to Pakistan.
On the economy, what viewer didn't notice that Obama had zero programs he would cut in the face of a bailout? Obama still wants us to think he is for tax cuts. As usual an empty suit Raf, whereas McCain looked far more authentic. He did well to distance himself from Bush and show he can be relied on as Independent and a leader.
Obama wants us to think leaving Iraq will save us big bucks, but look at what he is suggesting for Afghanistan. Had he held any meetings of his sub committee, he might understand the lack of NATO and events in Pakistan are the real culprits as well as a lack of a Patraeus strategy. McCain spelled out exactly what we should do. Certainly renounce any responsibility to Syrian bombing. Obama's defense of not voting at all on the Kyl Bill was silly. Yep, let's reject Quds role in Iraq. Obama called the "Revolutionary" Guard of Iran a terrorist group but he didn't favor the McCain approach on tougher sanctions now. He joked that Ahmadinejad is not incharge, but then Barak, who is? Do you want to hold direct talks with this religious nutjob too?
The biggest Obama joke was that invading Iraq has enabled Iran. First, with Saddam in power there would have been a justification for Iran's nuke program. Second, our invasion of Iraq made Iran blink (see NIE Report) and slow their program. The real fact that has enabled them of late despite the surge, is the hope of an Obama administration and the very call by Obama to talk to Ahmadinejad which Obama now denies he made. McCain did not drive this point home enough nor did he blast Obama on his conversion yesterday to missile defense. This is exactly what McCain was talking about in Iraq that "could" happen on a wider scale and he set up Patraeus for taking issue with McCain before the election. Did Obama utter one word in distain for the General? No. And do we all remember the support Obama threw the Betrayus Ad? Mullen also stated a policy on Pakistan that differs with Obama. Barak tried to sound like Mullen, Kissenger and Patraeus support him, but once again media failed to vet that this is not true. Had Hillary said such things, media would be tarring her today.
I was surprised that McCain didn't explain why getting the bailout right is what polls demand. This is a bit like the amnesty battle. This week I think people will side with the GOP making sure the plan isn't another Dodd repeat and throw some points towards McCain. People demand an investigation and Obama laying the blame on Bush over looks even Clinton?s review of the history. McCain missed the chance to hold Congress to blame. Perhaps the "experts" will take apart Obama's foreign policy ideas and even fact check how we got into the bailout mess in the first place..
By the way, our military thinks Hizb'Allah is the greatest present terror threat, but Obama clings to AQ in some cave. Kissinger released a statement saying Obama got it wrong. McCain is right. This time Obama gets nailed using the GOP against McCain. CNN was a round table attack on McCain. I listened as they defended Obama AFTER admitting certain statements were false. They took a ?this is what he really meant? approach and I was rather surprised they showed so little journalistic objectivity with several talking heads all chiming in like a pro Obama party.
The truth is that Obama shows the same stubborn myopia that Bush does. McCain nailed him on that. I have been saying this for a while; do we want another ideologue pretending to have a grip on facts, or a more bipartisan independent who can adjust to reality? Our reputation in the world isn't going to improve if we stumble economically, go into Pakistan, cut defense and decide treaties aren't worth the paper they are written on. Consider Obama/Pelosi and then consider divided government.
On Obama's tax cuts, Karl
On Obama's tax cuts, Karl Rove nailed it on Fox (I think it was on Hannity and Colmes.) He pointed out that both McCain and Obama propose tax cuts for 47-48% of Americans. What Obama does in addition that he claims is an extension of tax cuts to 95%, is actually a tax credit stimulus package. IOW it's a givaway of $500 to each adult that currently DOESN'T PAY FEDERAL INCOME TAX. Somehow he's getting away with calling a spending program a tax cut, because hardly anyone is calling him on it.
"The truth is that Obama
"The truth is that Obama shows the same stubborn myopia that Bush does"
Well, I'm not prepared to lay that totally on him, but I think Obama seems to have a few of the same weaknesses as Bush, namely Obama's refusl to admit he was wrong on the surge.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
