Dispatches from Dumbistan

If Arianna Huffington really believes that John McCain's campaign imploded because he supports the war, she really is a total pillock. McCain foundered because GOP primary voters - most of whom do not habitually attend anti-war rallies - disagree with him fundamentally over matters like BCRA and immigration, and simply don't trust him on a broad range of other policy issues. That's made it hard for him to raise money, and those two interlinking factors are what's basically eliminated him.

(Huffington also makes one of the most specious points yet offered in the blogosphere, criticizing McCain's reference to "'the liberal left.' As opposed to the conservative left, Senator?" As opposed to the moderate left, Arianna, which seems alive and fairly healthy.)

Wingers don't follow

Wingers don't follow reality. They follow their preferred narratives. Everything must be fitted to the narrative. The only way they can handle reality is by stuffing it into the mold.

Don't underestimate the age factor as a contributor in McCain's recent implosion. Many people like him but simply think he's getting too old for the job. Not that he's helped himself with BCRA (McCain-Feingold to non-poli-geeks) or his other positions. OTOH, he's at least been consistent about them.

There's also the fact that while we love our gadflies, that doesn't mean we want them in charge. For the same reason that we don't want film critics making movies.

Re the age thing, that's

Re the age thing, that's certainly possible as a factor, and I think there are many reasons why his bid is failing (I also think some folks are still mad about the gang of 14, for example, and still more think he's just unstable, and so on) - I'd say only that it's not necessary to exhaustively catalog every problem that McCain has to realize that supporting the war isn't one of them.

Arianna's reading is especially ridiculous, considering the fact

that the constituency most likely to reject McCain because of his war support wouldn't vote for him in the long run anyway, and those voters aren't in play during the primaries. It's the GOP base that has turned on him, for various reasons.

One could argue that the support McCain used to get from independents and moderates has fallen, and that is because of his support for the war, but that analysis seems dubious as well. McCain has always supported the war, and despite his (apparently futile) efforts to reestablish support with the base, he still enjoys a lot of respect at least, for those who support BCRA, comprehensive immigration reform, etc.

The fact is, a large chunk of the conservative base, for various reasons has an abiding contempt for McCain. As Simon said, those voters generally don't go to anti-war rallies.

"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."

John 16:33

Age is one of several factors

He does not appear to be well which could be just a misleading perception on my part, but that, along with age and a few of his recent stands on issues, makes him several slots down on my list.

Dumbistan for sure Simon

You think Huff and Puff would print anything denouncing Iran's arresting a Soros associate for bringing the Left's meesage of Democracy and Human Rights to Iran? From Dumbistan to Dumberstan.
