Democratic Endgame: The Bidding Opens

Submitted by Tully on Sun, 06/01/2008 - 9:04am

The U.K. Telegraph:

Hillary Clinton to be offered dignified exit

Bidding from strength?

Hillary Clinton will be offered a dignified exit from the presidential race and the prospect of a place in Barack Obama's cabinet under plans for a "negotiated surrender" of her White House ambitions being drawn up by Senator Obama's aides.

The former First Lady would get the chance to pilot Mr Obama’s reforms of the American healthcare system if she agrees to clear the path to his nomination as Democratic presidential candidate.

Senior figures in the Obama camp have told Democrat colleagues that the offer to Mrs Clinton of a cabinet post as health secretary or to steer new legislation through the Senate will be a central element of their peace overtures to the New York senator.

...Another Democrat who has discussed strategy with friends in the Obama inner circle said that Mr Obama was openly considering asking Mrs Clinton to join his cabinet, alongside two other former presidential rivals: John Edwards, who is seen as a likely attorney general; and Joe Biden, who is a leading contender to become Secretary of State.

VP is reportedly off the table. Clinton's not going to be a cheap date, she's not likely to leave her safe seat of power in the Senate for the promise of a you-can-be-fired cabinet post, tossing her a legislative bone that she could manage without your help (and to her own specs, not yours) is downright insulting, and "condescending" is NOT the line to take with the Cyberdyne Systems model HIL-2008 "little woman" that can still quite easily bring your electoral prospects down in smoking rubble. This is an opening bid, and it's unlikely to be accepted. The price will be higher. Clinton plays for keeps, and trying to shuffle her off to the attic like some dotty old aunt is to invite ruin.

(And, um, Senator Obama? John Edwards as AG? Are you nuckin' futz? Well, at least we've now found the Pretty Pony that was foretold in the prophecy!*)

[*--Why, no, I'm not quite tired of saying "I told you so!" yet.]

Tully your posts are excellent

We both seem to channeling the same Poli-god. And Biden, Mr. foot-in-mouth for SECSTATE? First stop Pakistan?

This just gets worse, doesn't it? Note that Obama resigns to spare Trinity, not crucify them. I was reminded by one Obama supporter last night that white America will see who the "masta" is now and that Jesus was black (and Palestinian?). If you check out the ABC blog threads the race war has already started with many Obama supporters telling Hllary to go back to the kitchen and started cooking like a good little woman should. Holy crap. As I said, McCain's best friends. Hillary should be far from this train wreck.

There's little space left under the bus Obama and you can't shut your supporters up, can you?...LOL

Nast rules....

Thanks for the compliment,

Thanks for the compliment, Max.

When I said earlier in the cycle that Obama should've gotten TUCC and Wright quietly out of the way as soon as he hit the Senate, that he could have greatly defused it by so doing, some people scoffed. It still woulda bit him, they said. Well, it wouldn't have had the same dose of rabies in the bite, now, would it?

Someday I need to write a post on the concept of applied political triage for candidates. He failed to begin treatment immediately, and now he's been hung with Moss and Pfleger's most recent words as well, and with timing that stinks for him. Had he bandaged the wound much earlier, he'd have avoided that and it would be a much smaller issue to beat him up with. Trying to distance himself from the church now just makes him look like a dithering weasel--he gets all the negatives with no positives.

Seems more like adding insult to injury than a "dignified exit"

[Clinton] would get the chance to pilot Mr Obama?s reforms of the American healthcare system if she agrees to clear the path to his nomination as Democratic presidential candidate....

What could be more natural: she's criticized Obama's healthcare plan, so she's obviously the perfect choice to implement his plan rather than her own, in a position whose tenure is entirely dependent on Obama's pleasure? How could this possibly be viewed as consolation prize?

"When someone says their heart needs lifting, don't ask how come, ask how high."

And if as a prize she's

And if as a prize she's allowed to promo her own healthcare agenda rather than Obama's, what would that say about the sincerity of his agenda?

Nope, it's just an opening bid, with the Obama camp hoping that they're publicly perceived as operating from a position of magnanimous strength in offering anything at all, when they have to know their November success depends on her. (Thus the cartoon...) Probably also hoping to squeeze a little extra out of Puerto Rico today by weakening Clinton's case. Some voters might buy it, but the Clinton campaign sure won't.
