Several Early Choices for New Administration Have Clinton Pedigree
Introducing his first appointments as president-elect, Mr. Obama reached deep into the Clinton fold on Wednesday, naming John D. Podesta, a former White House chief of staff, to lead his transition team. He has asked another former Clinton aide, Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, to be his own chief of staff and is said to be choosing between two other Clinton veterans for national security adviser...
...The tension has already generated concern among the Obama aides who labored for two years to turn an underdog into a president, in part by beating Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York to win the Democratic nomination, only to watch him turn to the Clinton crowd when it comes time to stock a government.
As loyalists in his Chicago headquarters spent the final weeks of the campaign focused on finishing the election, they were deliberately kept away from the fledgling transition efforts begun by Mr. Podesta under Mr. Obama’s direction in Washington.
Plus ça HopeyChange®, plus c'est la même chose! No word on the status of those pony orders yet, and the payroll accounting isn't going so well either. Temporary glitch, I'm sure.
Hmm, what a surprise. Who woulda thunk it? Well, time to throw some red meat to the howling mob, I suppose. Keep 'em distracted. Senator Leiberman, call your office.
Seems like a good move.
Seems like a good move. Running a campaign is very different than running the executive branch. It's pretty refreshing to see him not staffing his administration with his old cronies-- we've seen where valuing loyalty above competence gets us.
Yeah...
It's pretty refreshing to see him not staffing his administration with his old cronies....
Yes, he's staffing it with someone else's old cronies. Much better! Like when W. brought in all those Ford Admin people like Rumsfeld....
One would think that if the
One would think that if the nation desired re-tread Clinton staffers, they'd vote for Clinton. One also notes that Rahm Emmanuel is not a good omen for taking yak-yak about either bipartisan or "post-partisan" governorship to heart. Rather the opposite.
And please note that Emmanuel is a Chicago-land pol himself, part of the Chicago/Illinois machine. He's a dual-use crony!
I suppose one could also take it as an indication that Obama's taking the concept of recycling entirely too seriously, and in the wrong context.
Money, honey
Obama's probably using Clinton left-overs because they were willing to leave Hill (or drop support for her) and go to the more profitable side. Let's face it - for the first two years being connected to The First Black President can get one
1. political moxie
2. social moxie
3. $100,000 speeches
4. discount mortgages
5. free cheeseburgers (okay I made that one up)
It may not be kosher per se, but Clinton=good times to many Americans (never mind the dot-com phase and post-Soviet realignment) so it's politically astute of Obama

but better news
But it's better news than appointing a bunch of tight-arsed uberlefties, right?
The sooner Obama starts disappointing the uberleft, the more hope I'LL have. I mean, these things so far are quite small. But anything that suggests the Obama admin is prepared, you know, do some math, is a wee positive sign, dontcha think?
IOW, it's better than appointing Barney Frank sec of treas, Ralph Nader sec of labor, and Cindy Sheehan sec of state.

I have often said, and oftener think, that this world is a comedy for those who think, and a tragedy for those who feel. -Horace Walpole
I have to say, the Chief of
I have to say, the Chief of Staff announcement does not do anything help my apprehension that his post-partisan idea is a wet noodle. I'm still giving him a chance; but he is off to a bad start with the Emanuel choice.
Er....
But it's better news than appointing a bunch of tight-arsed uberlefties, right?
Er, that's exactly what Emmanuel is. Well, to be fair, he's actually a vicious leftie opportunist. And another recent former Freddie Mac board member, whose time on the board was marked by scandals involving campaign contributions and accounting irregularities, and helped lead to that collapse. Is that the HopeChange® everyone voted for? Just wondering.
Have they announced the defenestration of Joe Leiberman yet?
Didn't Obama say something about lobbyist during the campaign?
Well, Obama is quickly confirming my thoughts about him.
From Politico:
There is also a quote about signing a pledge not to lobby the agencies they help staff for one year. I suspect that those pledges will be more useful as toilet paper.
