Jonah Goldberg non-commitally likes Governor Sarah Palin as a possible veep for McCain. Jimmie at Sundries Shack is even more effusive, writing that Palin has "proven herself an impressive politician and a principled leader. She is immensely popular in her state and has the sort of demeanor that wins over fans of both parties."
I like her, but I'm not totally sold on McCain / Palin '08. Jonah says that "[s]he reinforces McCain's outsider-reformer-Western credentials," and Jimmie adds that she "is an unapologetic conservative who has been willing to take on entrenched and powerful organizations...." True enough; by all accounts, she's doing great things in Alaska, to stellar approval ratings. Certainly she's a rising star. If McCain should serve only four years (not inconceivable, although as alluded to here, he should keep mum on that), one can readily imagine her being the nominee in '12, and a spell as veep would make her heir apparent. But is now the time? The main concern I would have is that calling her to the dance floor this early into her term makes it harder for McCain to play the "inexperience" card against Obama. But Obama is going to pick someone experienced (David Brooks suggests Sam Nunn or Tom Daschle) and claim that nullifies the experience question anyway, so maybe it's a wash.
On the other hand, if not her, then who? And not entirely inconsequential, we should consider that she is not an old white guy (very much not), which has some cachet in this election cycle. Jonah has a useful gloss on this point: "for the moderate soccer mom types who were all jazzed about Hillary being the first woman president, she might win a few suburbanite female swing-voters for the same reason." Still: give me more.
My gut says no, but I think (as Thomas Bracket Reed laconically replied when asked if his party would nominate him for President) we could do worse, and we probably will.

Well, Simon, I hope the Republicans do not do worse. I suppose a Black, Hispanic and or woman would be good bets and experiance does matter because of the McCain age issue and his possible "only one term" deal. Sounds like a tactical move in political chess.
If you could just convince Ford Jr, Powell, or Bloomberg (did I say a Jew could help..LOL) you might have something. Women, I'm not sure about. Palin has come up eleswhere. The rate the Democrats are going, Hillary might be available.
the picture
makes her look like a secretary.
Chris
It does make her look like a secretary...
Where'd you find that one, Simon? It looks like the photo I'd find if I searched some stock photohouse for "happy secretary at computer."
I'll say again, that Ford Jr. as Veep on the GOP ticket doesn't
seem likely, but if it did happen, McCain would have my vote. Of course, as I've also said before, it's entirely possible McCain might get my vote either way, assuming he doesn't pick Romney.

Money quote from NRO: "McCain doesn't need to pick a boring white guy because he's got that locked up already."
Hee hee!
I would suggest that Mike Reynold's capsule analysis of the composition the Republican Party is somewhat relevant here. Namely, that the GOP has three main wings; Money, Guns, and Jesus. McCain already has Guns well-covered, it's the other two wings that are dubious of him. His task is to pick someone that can help get Money and Jesus to the polls while not chasing away indies and the middle by being too extreme.
geena guns and money
She gives off a real Geena Davis vibe. Maybe the glasses. I think she'd be a bad choice simply because a certain number of female voters won't like the way McCain looks at her. No matter how he looks at her. If the relationship seems fatherly, that's patronizing. If he seems nonplussed, that's just a downright negative. And if he ever gets caught not looking her in the eye, he's a dirty lech. And if the relationship is too cordial, folks will suggest he wants to screw her, or is screwing her. I think that makes this choice a minefield simply because of the way people think.
I spent some time mulling over the VP choices, but I kept coming back to "when was the least time we really thought that the VP choice made a substantive difference in the outcome?" Quayle's the only one who I think was a real negative on the ticket, and no one comes to mind as real plus. That's the bottom line for me.
All that notwithstanding, I think MR's jesus, guns, and money model is more than simply comical. Though it's certainly irreverent in the true sense, and even profane, it sketches the actual dynamics pretty well.
I wonder what folks think of the prospects for finding the sort of "two-fer" that Tully suggests. My sense is that while you can find guns'n'money twofers (think Tony Stark et al in Ironman) quite easily, and guns'n'jesus twofers (think Charlton Heston or maybe Huckabee) without scouring the globe, the jesus'n'money twofers are rare beasts. At least among politicians.
That suggests that McCain would have to choose either a money or a jesus, or between a fincon and a socon, IOW. If he does have to make such a choice, which one serves his needs better?
Personally, although I doubt he goes this route, i think he's best served by choosing a running mate who addresses his energy deficit, and who he has a good relationship with. Now some folks are bound to think that picking a young energetic mate will accentuate McCain's age and lack of vigor. But I think if he has a good relationship, then they could give off a pretty good mastor po-kwai chang vibe and increase McCain's energy.
I know that discussions about VP choice inevitably carry the odor of tokenism in one form or another. That's unavoidable, so I wwant to be clear that I'm not calling it out as something particular to the GOP. It's not. But McCain does present more of a personality challenge if tokenism is what rules the choice. McCain's a bad faker, and if the choice is someone chosen because they check off the most demographic and electoral college boxes but is someone McCain does not have a good relationship with, that will be far too clear to voters.

Money and religion
Well then Bloomberg might fit the bill if one considers Jesus was a Jew (unless of course if you've been to Trinity where Jesus is a Black Palestinian.)
Huckster and Romney would sink McCain. Michelle will say "Why'd he" pick them....LOL
Carly Fiorina is a decent pick. Thune if Daschle is repaid as VP (God how I can't stand Daschle's butt kissing) Kasich might be able to swing Ohio. Powell probably doesn't want the job. Whitman might be a decent pick, but has neither money nor religion. She would bring out the truthers and make Obama look bad...LOL
Obama may very well pick Webb to shore up his national defense credentials. Jindal and others might appear weak against Webb, so a tough woman may be the best bet. Fiorina brings some cash. I don't know if any socon would help McCain. And will the religion crowd really vote Obama?
nodding off til November
Thanks for resurrecting Reynolds' famed money, guns and Jesus line, Tully- love it. Palin gives off more of the Ashleigh Banfield vibe (it's the glasses). Anyway, if McCain was smart, he'd marry a Palin veep nomination with an ANWR drilling emphasis- that might generate some excitement. Till then, he's a guy doomed to snooze. Wake me up in January.
Well, Michael actually said
Well, Michael actually said Money, BOMBS and Jesus, but he forgot about the NRA. ;-)

bombs, guns- i get so confused.
Might need to modify that a bit....
The guns crowd and the bomb crowd may be far from co-extensive: look at the crowd following He Who Must Not Be Named. (luaP noR)
