Musta Been Good Advice!

Submitted by Tully on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 11:29pm

Best of the Web, Friday May 30, on the Michigan/Florida 50% proposals:

Far be it from us to get involved in this little spat, but it occurs to us that if you're a Clinton supporter penning an angry email, you may want to mention that even slaves counted as three-fifths of a person.

From the Miami Herald Online, Saturday May 31, from Clinton-supporting superdelegate Congressman Alcee Hastings' statement regarding the DNC decision to go with the 50% penalty for Michigan/Florida, and his decision to boycott the DNC convention:

I suppose the DNC has the right to block Democrats in Florida from attending the National Convention. They also have the right to be stupid, and stupid they are.

At the beginning of our great country’s history my ancestors were counted as only 2/3 of a person....

...Now, on May 31, 2008, a group of elitist insiders of the DNC have effectively said that some of my ancestors’ progeny equal only 1/2 and that men and women in Florida who voted on January 29th are 1/2 also. For a Party which will crown its historic nominee on the 45th anniversary of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, the DNC’s decision today is tragically ironic.

As a matter of protest, I do not intend to attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Never let it be said that Alcee Hastings is afraid to listen to James Taranto...or that the impeached former federal judge should maybe re-read Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the United States Constitution. Then again, maybe he's using that new "Obama Math."

A true ironist might point out that Hastings was one of 31 in Congress who voted to not count the electoral votes of Ohio in 2004.
