David Frum's new book

Submitted by Simon on Wed, 12/05/2007 - 3:49pm

Alas, the future envisioned so recently by Micklethwait & Wooldridge has been thwarted by the Bush administration's largely excreable second term. But riding to the rescue, Sir David Frum1 emails to say that his

new book, COMEBACK: Conservatism That Can Win Again, will be released by Doubleday on December 31. ... [It] argues that the Republican Party and the conservative movement are in serious trouble – but that with the right policies, we can turn things around and recreate a governing majority in 2008 and the years to come.

I’ve posted a PDF of the second chapter of the book online to give you an advance glimpse of my ideas. I hope you’ll find the book worthy of your time and attention – and that you’ll follow the links to Amazon or Barnes & Noble and order your copy early.

Out December 31st, folks - knowing our readers to be sophisticated and discerning (you're here, after all), and thus a pain in the neck to to buy Christmas presents for, that means you'll all have shiny new book store gift tokens bought by despairing relatives, so buy the book.

Post facto:
Podcast about Sir David's new book (1/3/08)

  1. 1. I knighted Frum sua sponte for his damn near heroic efforts in defeating the Miers nomination; although the Constitution provides that "[n]o title of nobility shall be granted by the United States," Art. I. § 9 Cl. 8, (1) I am not the United States and (2) even if I were, although "knighthood is a non-heritable form of gentility, ... [it] is not nobility" and would thus be permitted anyway.

Your footnotes crack me up

Your footnotes crack me up Simon.

I don't agree with everything Frum writes (No one is perfect, I don't even agree with everything I write), but he is thoughtful and thought provoking. I'll be sure to check out his book when it comes out.

Echo!

(No one is perfect, I don't even agree with everything I write)

Echo! Hear hear! Me too.

knighthood is a non-heritable form of gentility

Still, once a knight, always a knight. But I'm sometimes told that once a knight is enough....

Fruminations....

Well, Perle, Bolton, Wolfowitz and others are traditionally described as neocons. I wonder if Frum will discuss the fallout from said foreign policy prosecuted. Rubin might find some silver lining, but I don't at the moment.

Seems there are some smart ideas, though nuclear doesn't appear as cost effective as breaking the alternative energy/heavy oil extraction barrier approach. Sorry, but nuclear isn't on my top forty these days.

Serving up high insurance bills to all Americans might not be such a great mantra, but Frum seems to take a smarter tact in moving past older issues and anticipating trends.

I actually liked your footnote as well. I admire your enthusiasim. Must be that Republicans are generally happier than Democrats. (I've figured that out why. Perfectionism leads to more unhappiness than simply accepting a certain realism and lesson of experiance. Liberals are more idealists and utopian so the are always more depressed about world with it's predictable expectations and pragmatic policies. In that regard, unfortunately, I think they have some denied admiration for extremists bent on their own visions of perfection.)

I'd agree with that (?1, I

I'd agree with that (¶1, I mean) - I wouldn't think you could write a book on this subject without tackling the war.

Well since I know that you're less than perfect

I anticipated your agreement to be partial.

And I'm very unhappy about it.

LOL

P.S. thanks for allowing me my fruminations on your earlier thread.

I make a point of never

I make a point of never agreeing with anything more than partially, particularly if it's something I said myself. ;)

In that case

care for some meatballs? I hear they're a big hit at the IC dining room.

I loved the footnote as well, Simon. A good laugh.

I always thought Frum was a decent guy, and pretty thought-provoking in his analysis. I'll have to read his book, although obsviously from a different political perspective.
