Another Palin meme dies on the vine

Submitted by Simon on Tue, 09/02/2008 - 7:01pm

Sarah Palin is for abstinence-only education, the meme goes (actually it's not clear that she is, but let's assume it arguendo) - but her daughter got pregnant, which demonstrates that abstinence-only education is a failure. This post is typical of the type.

The obvious flaw in the theory is its dubious assumption that if Sarah is for abstinence-only education, ergo that was the sex ed. that Bristol got. It appears that Bristol went to public school, however, and received a standard sex education. So the meme seems to reduce to something quite unimpressive: if Bristol had received abstinence-only education (which she didn't), the same thing would have happened (probably). Like most of the Palin memes it turns out to be insubstantial.

Previously-debunked Palin memes: Sarah wasn't vetted (or was inadequately-vetted) | Sarah was picked because she's a she | Choosing Sarah was a mistake | Sarah said she didn't know what the veep does | McCain's pick "came out of nowhere"

Palin not a member of AIP

Her husband was a member however. But I don't think this dog will hunt.

The other obvious flaw lies

The other obvious flaw lies in the inductive move from the particular to the general, which is an invalid step in ANY probability extrapolation not involving certainty of outcome in all branches.

Since neither abstinenece-only or "regular" sex-ed lead to 100% success rates in preventing teen pregnancy, one cannot extrapolate from the fact of pregnancy which type of sex education was received.

It's also important to separate abstinence-promoting sex ed from abstinence-only. Program design is crucial. In "mixed" programs success rates (measured in pregnancies and STD's avoided, and initial age of commencement of sexual activity) have generally been higher than in programs at either extreme. Also, a positive correlation between programs including a strong abstinence emphasis and high-school graduation rates has been noted.

Causation is however unclear there. Boosters claim it as an unambiguous result of the content type, but cynical old analysts such as myself note that many abstinence-only programs tend to be voluntary alternatives and thus have a major element of self-selection (more-involved parents are more likely to make that choice) and to involve greater positive adult-child mentor relationships that extend beyond the normal school day (the programs overlap with mentoring for at-risk youth). Both of these factors by themselves are strong factors against early sexual activity.

By the time a child hits driving age, the effects of sex ed have begun to wane, and by time of high-school graduation very little difference if any can be found in outcomes (pregnancies, STDs) between program-type groups.

All of which leads to the roundabout conclusion that keeping teens from getting knocked up before they hit senior year makes them more likely to graduate. Duh.

sing it brother..if I had a hammer

Oh, dude! Sing it. An absolutely crucial distinction. The difference between a toolbox and a single tool Probably a correlation to the "...to a man with a hammer..." rule. Equip kids with the tools they may need depending on what they encounter? Lord yes. Give them only a hammer and tell to look only for nails? Thanks, but no thanks.

Funny

As this blog points out the flaws of attacking Palin for "inexperience", "failure to provide sex education", etc., it seems the DNC is listening. They haven't found the handle on Palin yet.

Just to add a conflation: did anyone else LOL when they heard CNN wax about the need to vet the GOP claims last night and not to accept simply the purty words and generalizations? Not one "journalist" asked whether they had done that at the Democratic convention. They didn't even say Donna worked for the DNC, but listed all who ever worked for the GOP. And then they made such a fuss over Joe when Biden and Obama leveled a far more nasty and untrue attack on McCain. No vetting, just the usual Obama worship.

Now that is fair and balanced....LOL
