A bridge too far

Submitted by Simon on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 7:23pm

Maybe if liberals won't believe us about Palin's role in killing the bridge to nowhere - they continue to churn out the lie that what she said is a lie - they'll believe the in-house newsletter of the Obama campaign, the New York Times:

Gov. Sarah Palin ordered state transportation officials to abandon the ''bridge to nowhere'' project that became a nationwide symbol of federal pork-barrel spending. The $398 million bridge would have connected Ketchikan, on one island in southeastern Alaska, to its airport on another nearby island. ''Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport,'' Ms. Palin, a Republican, said in a news release, ''but the $398 million bridge is not the answer.'' She directed the State Transportation Department to find the most ''fiscally responsible'' alternative for access to the airport.

(Via insty).

*sigh* Civility really has begun atmospheric reentry since 8/29, hasn't it.

Actually...

... she was for it before she was against it: Palin ran for Governor on a "build-the-bridge" platform, attacking "spinmeisters" for using the insulting term "Bridge to Nowhere."

In September 2007, Governor Palin canceled the Gravina Island Bridge, attributing the decision to Congress. Alaska did not return the $454.4 million in the original earmark to the federal government, and Palin continued to support funding the Knik Arm Bridge. Construction also continued on a $25 million access road on Gravina Island which now leads only to an empty beach; state officials reasoned that if the $25 million had not been spent, it would have to be returned to the federal government.

OK Brainiac....

The Knik Arm Bridge is a toll bridge, created by the Alaska state legislature in 2003...how exactly was Palin gonna stop that?

Also, without the bridge there was talk about improving ferries in the area...gee could the improved road access be used for that?

And, hey, since changing your mind about important issues is some sort of instant disqualification what the hell do you do with Biden who was against abortion before he was for it?

She only changed her mind

She only changed her mind after nearly everyone else had and her position became a political liability. The campaign is trying to make it seem as though she was always against it and didn't keep all the money anyway.

There's already a ferry system in place that the road to an empty beach doesn't not improve in any way.

I actually think she should support the Knik Arm Bridge.

God, War & Palin

Here is the entire quote-
"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

She is saying that we need to pray that we are actually on a task from God, not that we are on a task from God. Don't we always need to check our motives and ask for wisdom?
