Or do we? Newsbusters think so, linking to this, which in turn links to an image purporting to be John McCain's birth certificate. Newsbusters gasps that McCain "was born in Colon, Republic of Panama, which is OUTSIDE the former US controlled Canal Zone and is, unquestionably, sovereign Panamanian territory...."
Much less to this than meets the eye. Newsbusters' claim is a puzzle, because according to a 1970 map, Colon is inside the Canal Zone. So much for that theory. The birth certificate leaves ample room to argue (as the source cited by Newsbusters does) that the PCZ wasn't sovereign territory and that McCain is ineligible by reason of not being natural-born, but that just takes us back to my post arguing otherwise and Pat's argument that the PCZ's status is irrelevant anyway
