Whatever
Cystic Fibrosis is a terrible disease. Some of you may remember that a fellow political blogger, Dean Barnett, died of cystic fibrosis earlier this year. It is a genetic disease affecting the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis, and most individuals with the disease die young. The average lifespan for people with cystic fibrosis is 36 years. It is the number one genetic killer in the U.S.
So, it would seem that it would be a nice thing to raise money to fund cystic fibrosis research, right? The answer depends on your world view. If you are a normal person who is compassionate towards those who are suffering, then you would gladly support those who wish to raise money for cystic fibrosis research. But if you see the world through race-filtered glasses, then cystic fibrosis isn't a diverse enough disease. It disproportionately affects Caucasians. And since white people are evil, it is surely a bad thing to try and raise money for research for a disease that affects them more than the so-called historically disadvantaged races.
So said the students of a university in Ottawa. The Carleton University Students' Association has voted to drop a cystic fibrosis charity as the beneficiary of its annual Shinearama fundraiser because the disease is not "inclusive" enough. They voted nearly unanimously in favor of the motion that disparaged cystic fibrosis as "only affect[ing] white people, and primarily men."
It's not surprising that in their rush to disassociate themselves with that evil white person's disease, the students of Carleton University didn't bother to check their facts. Cystic Fibrosis affects men and women in similar numbers, and while Caucasians are more likely to be afflicted with it than non-Caucasians, the term "Caucasian" includes more than just "white" people. You'd expect better from our supposed "best and brightest." Especially considering that the motion to change the beneficiary of the film festival was made by a science student. But quite clearly being college educated is not synonymous with intelligence.
Only one student present voted against the motion. A shining beacon of hope for sanity on college campuses, the lone dissenter, Nick Bergamini said, "I think they see this, in their own twisted way, as a win for diversity. I see it as a loss for people with cystic fibrosis." No kidding.
I'm sure that they also are
I'm sure that they also are against funding charities that deal with sickle-cell anemia.
.
.
Since Sickle Cell Anemia Disproportionately Affects Blacks...
I would think that the students would support sickle-cell anemia fundraising as blacks were historically under served by the medical community. They probably believe we should apply affirmative action principles to disease research to make up for previous racism.

I cannot disagree with anything you've pointed out Fern. I do
feel the need to point out that this stupidity is hardly a universal thing amongst left-of-center people, though. As to the point at hand, I'm continually amazed at how badly some people allow ideology to screw up their thinking.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
To highlight that this
To highlight that this appalling leftist PC'ism here is not only disgusting but stupid and factually wrong, a repeat of what Fern and the Canadian CF head point out: CF presents just as often among women as it does among men, and "Caucasian" is NOT synonymous with "white" anyway.
They can't even get their facts right, making it the worst kind of straight-up bigotry. I mean, it would be bad enough if they had their facts right, but here they're just being bigots to be bigots to NO PURPOSE.
Stupidity unbound. Even the motivations are purely stupid and
vile. What utter foolishness.

As a former Canadian
As a former Canadian resident and a Canadian citizenship holder I give my full apologies to everyone on behalf of my misguided kin.
And people wonder why I find hanging out with Mormons more sane than living in Canada...

Oh for heaven's sake, get a grip
As a current Canadian and resident of Ottawa, I can assure you the students are catching a lot of home-grown flak for this. It's not a "Canadian" thing at all. It's a young and stupid thing. And Carleton is still trying very hard to shake its moniker of Last Chance U (not one of our best, with the notable exception of its journalism programme). This incident is not going to help.
And the students are reconsidering.
Fern, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are two different institutions. The Ottawa University does not exist.
And lastly, I have to agree with Rafique. Extremism of any stripe engenders stupidity. Shall we start with the neo-cons' amazing doctrine that the markets are always right, and that Homo economicus makes decisions on the basis of rationality. You know where that has gotten us. That one cannot be explained away as a phenomenon of young and stupid, unfortunately. Just stupid, period.
The Walrus Said
I Can Smell The Intelligence from Salt Lake...
Do you not know the difference between free market ideology and corporatism? Or that a vast number of schools of thought hold to a market-friendly view with varying social issue positions? The very fact you use neo-conservatism as some kind of pejorative shows the extent of your intelligence in these matters. You may want to brush up on the atmosphere in Canadian post-secondary schools (the banning of pro-Israeli groups in Montreal, for instance) and brush up on the schools of Western ideology before you decide to grace us with your vast knowledge of political matters.Lesson over.
Update by Pat: GenerationPatriot, we don't look kindly upon personal attacks here, particularly when aimed at our good friends, like Walrus.

Thank you...
I can assure you, she's not the sort to use "neo-con" as a catch-all phrase for "policies I don't like." You're welcome to argue with her over specific uses of the phrase, just not to cast general aspersions on her character or intelligence.

All the ills of the world
Not at all. There are a lot of ills in the world and they spring from a wide variety of sources. I only laid one of the recent ills of the world at their doorstep, albeit a rather major one. Would you feel happier if I delivered my rant on political correctness? Or militant atheism? It's actually pretty rare that I take a jab at the right side of the spectrum, and in this case was done mainly to provide a little balance. So what I object to in this comment of yours is the extrapolation from a single data point to come to an unwarranted conclusion.
What I objected to in your former comment was the equating of Canadian and the idiocy demonstrated by those students. There was nothing specifically or even representatively Canadian about their idiocy. An intellectual fallacy that has always greatly disturbed me is the straw man fallacy, and I do tend to get a little riled when I see one of those things flapping in the breeze. And seeing as Canada tends to get pretty unfair press in the American media in general, I also tend to try to show the other side of the picture.
One of the reasons I poke my nose in at this blog on a semi-regular basis is because the word Canadian does not evoke a reflexive sneer. At least not among the authors of the blog.
I am also very fond of Fern herself and must apologize if I came across as ill-tempered in my remarks. It's true I was feeling a wee bit cranky, and I'm sorry if it tinged my remarks in her direction. You're still way up there on my respect meter, Fern.
The Walrus Said
Thanks for Catching that Mistake
I've updated the post to accurately reflect the name of the university involved.
As far as any extremist ideology resorting to stupidity more often than common sense, that was my whole point in this post. Of course I agree that extremists on the right also fall victim to their own ideology from time to time. At the time I wrote the post I thought that "leftist" clearly referred to those farthest away from moderates. If that wasn't as clear as I thought it was, then I apologize for appearing to tar my center-left friends along with the idiots at the far reaches of the left who thought that affirmative action should be applied to disease research.

You'll be happy, Fern
The student council not only backed down but there have been resignations and there is a move afoot to impeach the Student Council president. I didn't even know that can be done.
