"We face a threat from the perversion of one faith in particular."
Obama is right to continue emphasizing the all-important distinction between religious views compatible with democratic pluralism and those that aren't. As he deals with the fallout of the attack, he must continue to separate Islamic extremism from Islam as a whole. But his words at Fort Hood, while comforting, do not really come to grips with the problem. America does not face a threat from the perversion of faith in general. We face a threat from the perversion of one faith in particular. The president needs to dip into his reservoir of good will to remind mainstream Muslims of their special responsibility. If militant Islamism is a distortion of their moderate beliefs, only their beliefs can defeat it.
Daily Show Guest
Someone on the Daily Show years ago, when Iraq looked like it was gonna split, said Islam has been in a civil war between the moderates and the fanatics. It's pretty obvious this is true. We won't be able to defeat Islamists without the help of liberty minded Muslims outside the US.

Hi Raf, even New England can screw up the clock....
What the media misses...
I think Obama is keeping his other hand under wraps. IAEA has just demanded inspection of three Syrian nuclear sites as well as saying nyet to Iran's Qom plant. What about other secret facilities?
I think Obama knows one religion in particular is his greatest threat. Unfortunately, the clock is running out on his options to deal with this. He should have anticipated this. At the present time, this would be another Islamist State sworn by their religious views to destroy Israel. Wouldn't put it past the EU however.
As far as rhetoric, Democrats are still loath to say 9/11 was a terrorist act inflicted by illegal combatants. They want to relegate such behavior to the realm of relative criminality. They avoid such discussion about distinctions. Media manipulates the discourse too. Look at how the media plays along with this intentional distortion in their coverage of Hasan. When they stumble there is always Fox to blame.
Well, Illinois may have lost the Olympics, but they just might get the gig for holding Gitmo's band of merry Middle Easterners with a strange slant on their particular religious belief.
Yeah,
Hi Raf, even New England can screw up the clock....
I think that may go down in history as the biggest coaching blunder in history. I couldn't believe my eyes.
As to the larger issue, I've said before that it is good and proper to make clear that we are not as war with Islam, and most Muslims aren't terrorists, but we are at war with those who follow an ideological perversion of a particular faith. It does no one any good to turn a blind eye to that, in order to avoid offense, when you have clear warning signs. The issue is Islamist ideology, and seeing that this ideology is not representative of maionstream Islam, I think mainsteam Muslims ought not waste opportunities to point this out.
There are a few problems
There are a few problems particularly afflicting Islam. One would be their notion of political v religious. I can't say Christianity drew clear lines long ago, but Islamists coupled with Sharia today presents a real problem for Liberal Democracy.
We walk a tough line between being objective and the people on the right like Spencer who take it a step too far. Still, Islamic prisoners are influencing inmates in British jails and direct jihad from their cells. We can look at the connection between Hasan and internet jihadists. How filtered is the media? PC mindset is making matters worse. I expected more from the feminists.
Well, Hamas still seeks to destroy Israel and refuses to form a unity government with Fatah who also has a charter to destroy ISrael. So what do Islamists do in such a dead lock? They go and ask the EU to recognize the Islamist State of Palestine. Wonderful.
