Thanks For That Reminder, Jimmy!

Submitted by Tully on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 7:34am

Because we really do need to be reminded occasionally.

Report: Jimmy Carter to Meet With Hamas Leader in Syria

Former President Jimmy Carter is reportedly preparing an unprecedented meeting with the leader of Hamas, an organization that the U.S. government considers one of the leading terrorist threats in the world.

The Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that Carter was planning a trip to Syria for mid-April, during which he would meet with Khaled Meshal, the exiled head of the Palestinian terror group Hamas, on April 18.

Maybe Jimmeh is hoping that a Democratic administration will empower him to relive his earlier victories as an effective elder statesman, now that his military leadership is no longer in effect.

Or maybe he's just trying to find a new BFF. After all, some of his absolute favorite people have faded from the scene, and other old buddies are either failing rapidly in health or just don't seem to want him around anymore, now that he doesn't swing so big a stick, and despite BIG favors done for them in the past.

You're 83 years old, Mr. Carter. It's time to retire and go play with the grandkids, maybe build some more houses for the poor. Really. Or if you feel you simply must deal with Hamas without official credentials, you could exercise your talents in children's literature--I hear they do some work in that direction, and you'd likely be a real tool useful fool valuable asset to jihadist Palestinian indoctrination educational efforts. Could be right up your alley.

Believe it or not, we really can get along without you.

Gateway Pundit, Jules Crittenden, Cap'n Ed Morrisey AllahPundit* and The Moderate Voice have more.

[*--my bad, linkage fixed. Though Cap'n Ed's piece on Iran's funding of Sadr and Al-Qaeda in Iraq is also well worth your time to read....]

Oh, Jimmy, when will you learn?

I think the issue here, as Christine pointed out on TMV, is that Carter is just clueless. His naivete, ignorance, and self-importance leads him to do these foolsih things.

It's over, Mr. Carter, you've got to let this go...

Thanks for the endorsement

Thanks for the endorsement of my comment, Rafique. And as Kevin Sullivan and I were discussing at his blog (Independent Liberal), this may be a good argument for electing an older president like McCain. If we keep electing young pups, how many loose cannon 'senior statesmen' will we have going around conducting foreign policy? Better to elect them when they're already one foot in the grave LOL, so they won't last too much longer after they're out of office.

I beg to differ on it being

I beg to differ on it being sheer naivete, because it's so entirely one-sided that the "random walk" results of naivete do not seem to apply. But I like the older-president argument! Just don't count on it applying too much to a McCain ex-presidency. McCain's mother Roberta is 96 and still kickin'.

who gives a flying fart about Carter's dotage?

Who really gives a flying fart what the lesser JC does on his own in plying outdated amateur statecraft? I mean seriously. If it weren't the folks who bother to notice just to get a little bent out of shape about it, who would even know?

This business of noticing and complaining about what ex-Presidents should and should not do in their doddering years can get awfully tedious. He's not an official representative of the US at the present time, and as far as I'm concerned, that's the end of it. The only importance he gets in such self-appointed roles is whatever importance we each decide to grant to it. If only we could get everyone to ignore him, we'd be in good shape.

But I agree, in case I've obscured that. Jimmy, Elvis has left the building, OK?

Sadly, he still has enough

Sadly, he still has enough legitimacy that his otherwise idiotic actions do have an effect, such as when he legitimized the fixing of the 2004 Chavez recall election in Venezuela.

If ONLY we could get everyone to ginore him...but we can't.

Yup, but even that does sort

Yup, but even that does sort of fall under "how much importance we decide to grant" mileage. After all, did Chavez or does any dictator need much legitimacy for fake elections? Hussein and others "got away" with them for years. Seriously asking, what percent of folks who care about free elections were really fooled because Carter gave Chavez his stamp? Hasn't he been approving semi-suspect elections for years just because they were somehow noticeably less than 100% sham? Not that this even means anything. It's like the difference between just taking a dive and bothering to make it look good, ya know?__________
