Everything You Think You Know Is Wrong

Submitted by Rafique on Tue, 08/26/2008 - 5:36pm

At least when it comes to the truth of the Russia-Georgia conflict. This solid piece from Michael Totten:

TBILISI, GEORGIA – Virtually everyone believes Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili foolishly provoked a Russian invasion on August 7, 2008, when he sent troops into the breakaway district of South Ossetia. “The warfare began Aug. 7 when Georgia launched a barrage targeting South Ossetia,” the Associated Press reported over the weekend in typical fashion.

Virtually everyone is wrong. Georgia didn't start it on August 7, nor on any other date. The South Ossetian militia started it on August 6 when its fighters fired on Georgian peacekeepers and Georgian villages with weapons banned by the agreement hammered out between the two sides in 1994. At the same time, the Russian military sent its invasion force bearing down on Georgia from the north side of the Caucasus Mountains on the Russian side of the border through the Roki tunnel and into Georgia. This happened before Saakashvili sent additional troops to South Ossetia and allegedly started the war.

Read the whole thing, as it's much too lengthy to properly excerpt. Let me also add that this, among other reasons is why Obama's recent gaffe is so frustrating. I know it's his week and all, but I have to call 'em as I see 'em.

Wow

Just wow. No wonder I couldn't get the pieces to line up in this story. I kept looking at the reports and thinking that something wasn't making sense.

The Walrus Said

I said back then that it had

I said back then that it had almost certainly been orchestrated by Moscow with the willing assistance of the "independent" Ossettian administration (or vice versa) and I seem to have been correct.

Hello! Sorry for my English..
An economic crisis comes to a head at the USA, therefore specially imposes the USA conflicts, to undermine the economy of other states and embroil between itself, accordingly to reduce economic solidarity and economic turn of these countries. The same promoting the status of leader on a background warring countries. And also suppression propaganda about mighty and "just" America. Sale of weapon conflicting countries, which America produced enough at one time, also will cover a cost all expenses on untiing of conflicts and able to heave up welfare of the USA. The USA nothing threatens, this country is on other continent and knowingly chosen a place for the upshot of conflicts a little rather from the mainland. The present policy of the USA reminds the policy of Hitler which intentionally and prudently flew to the arms exactly in the moment of crisis in the state me.
