It's no secret that the rank-and-file employees of the Department of State of the United States of America are not great cheerleaders for the country whose interests they are paid to represent. In foreign policy matters, they all too often seem devoted to finding ways to blame America for all the problems in the world. They castigate American policy makers for pursuing America's self interests, while excusing all manner of absurd conduct by other countries as being only natural pursuits of their own self-interests. But Dr. Kendall Myers has brought this deplorable practice to a new low, and he should be fired immediately.
In a speech at the Johns Hopkins Institue for Advanced International Studies this past Tuesday, Dr. Myers lambasted the decisions of his ultimate boss, the President of the United States, over the conduct of the war and the actions of one of our staunchest allies, the United Kindgom. He specifically criticized Prime Minister Tony Blair and compared Mr. Blair, quite unfavorably, to other former British Prime Ministers.
He also suggested that he "hoped" the U.K. would drift further away from the United States and closer to the European Union. As the The Times reported:
He [Myers] added that “in a certain sense I hope they [Britain] break it with us” because it was important for Britain to have stronger bonds with the EU. “But what I think and fear is that Britain will draw back from the US without moving closer to Europe. In that sense, London’s bridge is falling down.”
Got that? An officer of the United States of America, who has taken an oath to uphold its Constitution, to further its interests, hopes that a key ally "breaks it with us", and he chose to share that opinion in a very public forum.
If you work at that level for the government of the United States and you can't bear the policies enacted by our elected leaders, Dr. Myers, you should do the honorable thing and quit. Don't keep sucking off the taxpayer's teat while oh-so-smugly denouncing the policies we have, through our elected representatives, adopted. We pay you to advance our interests, not Europe's. The Times article says you are contemplating retirment. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Update by Pat, June 6, 2009: As you can see from the comments, turns out the State Department really should have listened to me. Myers and his wife were arrested today on charges of spying for the Cuban government.
Last laugh
Guess you got the last laugh!
Walter Kendall Myers-Cuban spy
You certainly nailed this one!
Commie spy
Lol this piece of trash from this article just outed as a Cuban Commie spy. Helping repression while lecturing the US and UK, what a fraud!

Kendall Myers and his wife have been arrested for espionage. They've been Cuban spies for decades. It seems his sole purpose in seeking a State Department career, was to gain access to classified information for his Cuban masters.
I wonder how many other America-hating American officials are spies?
What if we elect one as president some day?
How right you were.
How right you were.
Incisive comment you have
Incisive comment you have there, especially in light of the recent revelations that he was a spy. Makes me wonder whether he was ordered to do something like this to help sabotage US interests or if it just came naturally like his treason.
Kendall Myers
Now we know he really was working for the other side.
It amazes me to see how many
It amazes me to see how many spies are also professors at our universities. Here in Miami we recently had 2 teaching at Florida International University that were convicted. Am I being paranoid or do we need to take a closer look at all these "liberal" professors?
It amazes me to see that
It amazes me to see that there have been so many spies not just in the state department but also working as professors in our universities. We recently had 2 convicted here in Miami working for Florida Internation University. Am I being paranoid or do we need to take a closer look at these "liberal" professors?
Congratulations
We seldom get to see the justification for our labors, even years on. Glad this played out for you.
