Chicago...

Is out.

I think I would have been

I think I would have been surprised if Chicago got it. I am a little surprised it was first out, though. I expected that to be Tokyo. Rio deserved the shot. Probably saves the U.S. people a couple million in future earmarks.

Seems right

Seems right to me. Do the games actually bring a net positive dollar amount or is it just a feel good thing?

I don't get the "Obama got what he deserved" reactions. That's over the top stupid. Like Brian said, let's save it for the real stuff.

I agree...

I do think that, just looking at it as a matter of political tactics, it wasn't very smart of the President to go lobby in person, certainly not without some solid background intel that we had a very good shot at it. The fact that we were out so early suggests that we weren't really in serious contention.

But that's just looking at it analytically from what was wise for him politically. I'm disappointed in the Republicans who made a deal of this, or who even rooted against Chicago getting it.

I disagree that the US was

I disagree that the US was not in serious contention. It does seem that there was an effort by the Rio supporters to game the system knowing that their best chance was to knock out Chicago in the first round by making sure Tokyo, the one that had almost no chance of winning, made it past the first round. Many of the Tokyo votes probably would have gone to Chicago if they were knocked out in the first round. I suspect there was an active effort by Rio supporters to vote for Tokyo in the first round. Note the fact that Tokyo dropped in vote total from Round 1 to Round 2. In this kind of voting system, that would likely not happen unless someone was trying to game the system. Rio played the game well. Had Chicago made it past the first round, they had a good shot at winning.
