GOP preps for talk radio confrontation
It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). “I have this old-fashioned attitude that when Americans hear both sides of the story, they’re in a better position to make a decision.”
....Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she planned to “look at the legal and constitutional aspects of” reviving the Fairness Doctrine.
“I believe very strongly that the airwaves are public and people use these airwaves for profit,” she said. “But there is a responsibility to see that both sides and not just one side of the big public questions of debate of the day are aired and are aired with some modicum of fairness.”
Mike Pence (R-IN) sees it differently:
“Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine would amount to government control over political views expressed on the public airwaves.”
Of course. That's the idea. I'm not the only one a bit peeved, as this op/ed on Examiner.com makes clear:
Get your hands off our talk radio
Why do liberals like Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., keep trying to tell the rest of us what political opinions we must listen to in the media?
...Of course, nobody thinks a revived Fairness Doctrine would only be applied to radio. It wouldn’t be long before we would hear liberals demanding that broadcast TV and the Internet be made “fair,” too. What Feinstein really wants is for federal bureaucrats to decide what political opinion programming we should hear. She presumes to know better than listeners what is “fair.”
...Political expression in America is being liberated as has never before been done in human history. Why does that bother Feinstein, Boxer, Clinton, Kucinich and other Fairness Doctrine advocates?
Indeed. I don't think "fairness" or "balance" really have anything to do with it, but that's the line being used. Just ask John Kerry:
KERRY FOR FAIRNESS DOCTRINE; CORRECT 'IMBALANCE'
Bad Americans. You have been thinking improper thoughts, listening to all the wrong propaganda! You obviously need balancing. Just a little rectifying of your political and mental humors...really, it won't hurt....

Only one caveat...
"Why do liberals like Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., keep trying to tell the rest of us what political opinions we must listen to in the media?
...Of course, nobody thinks a revived Fairness Doctrine would only be applied to radio. It wouldn?t be long before we would hear liberals demanding that broadcast TV and the Internet be made ?fair,? too. What Feinstein really wants is for federal bureaucrats to decide what political opinion programming we should hear. She presumes to know better than listeners what is ?fair.?
If all this is as it seems, we're not talking about true liberals anymore, are we?
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Why, no!
If all this is as it seems, we're not talking about true liberals anymore, are we?
Why, no! We're talking about progressives!
Seriously, I still regret using the word "liberal" in the first post, months back, as the term has long since ceased to be used in its original sense, and now is simply a synonym for leftist/socialist. I prefer the classical version myself, where the op/ed author there is using the modern version.
Hold on a sec, Tully.
I'm not all suggesting that modern liberals are socialists, rather that many of these pro-fiarness doctrine types will assert themselves as liberals, yet not be so in this case.
Classical or modern, for that matter.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Absolutely
I'm not all suggesting that modern liberals are socialists, rather that many of these pro-fiarness doctrine types will assert themselves as liberals, yet not be so in this case.
Absolutely, Rafique, many or even most of those who assert themselves as "liberals" these days are nothing of the kind, save under the more modern usage wherein it means "leftist." Which is why I usually avoid the term.
When those who are advocating such things (Feinstein, Durbin, Kerry) call themselves "liberals," the use of the term in at least the sarcastic sense is occasionally unavoidable. One can certainly dispute what a "true liberal" actually is--but the label usage has been corrupted, reduced to a factional synonym. One that through that corruption has fallen into such disrepute that the word "progressive" is now the less-objectionable term of choice for leftists.
Feel free to substitute whatever single-word label you prefer in place of that writer's use of "liberal."
If one was to examine
If one was to examine political labeling and its inaccuracies, it would be fairly unreasonable to ignore the liberal usage of "Conservative." Many that label themselves liberal OR conservative tend to not be so.
-Matthew
Democrats are illiberally restoring Liberalism's good name.
I think that Bobby did not have in mind strictly classical considerations when he used the term "Liberal Consensus". Modern Liberalism, given a big boost by FDR, has some principle elements.
1. Equal protection and opportunity under the law for all races, sexes and religious persuasions.
2. Affirmation of the Bill of Rights with emphasis on Free Speech, Due Process and a strong line between religion and government.
3. Regulation and preservation of the environment the "people" share.
4. The recognition that Liberal Democracy and Free Markets require protection and promotion to ensure the security of Free People over time.
5. The promotion of international institutions that defend and promote human rights and conflict resolution.
7. The two-state solution in Palestine.
8. Government support of policies that provide a safety net for seniors, the poor and the disabled as well as regulation and support for public education and job training.
9. Desegregation and assimilation as well as limited affirmative action to redress discrimination.
10. (Later) the right for a woman to have an abortion when the fetus cannot survive outside the womb naturally.
11. The willingness to sacrifice in the name of defending allies, treaty obligations, and the Constitutionality of a military draft in times of national emergency.
12. The need to balance civil liberties with the contingencies of war whether a Cold War or a Hot one. (see Kennedy speech)
13. Limiting corporate welfare and the power of elites to petition the government with enough money to pervert policy and lower taxes for themselves.
Most of us remember this Liberal stance from FDR to LBJ. Although Carter mucked around with much of the Liberal Tradition, he did not radically change course during his term. Clinton promised a return to a New Democrat mindset, restoring the Liberal Tradition. The record is mixed though he did reject the Kosmunists.
One can use the term Liberal in a positive way. Progressive had a good feel which I liked. ?Progressive? scientists have recently offered a more likely mechanism for the origin of life than the RNA-first model. Who can criticize progress? Now the term means something a bit different.
What the Democratic leadership has dumped into the Party by inviting the Kosmunists in, is a displacement of the traditional (modern) Liberal notions with an ideology that clashes with Classical AND modern Liberal traditions. They oppose the Jeffersonian view of promoting Liberal Democracy abroad AND they pervert the modern Liberal stand on Free Speech, secret ballots, curtailing election fraud, and even the rule of law in regard to immigration.
I will continue to use a good word like Liberal, but I have long stopped using it to describe Kerry, Gore, Dean and others who borrow elements from Liberalism when promoting their NeoLiberal views. The big story is that Liberalism is being killed by Democrats and I suggest Republicans grab up the values lost. Maybe one day Ann Coulter will speak fondly of Liberal values (not that I care in the least) and focus her wrath on those that misused the term in seeking illiberal results. The same can be said of course, for conservatives, but the two terms, Liberal and Conservative were never meant to be equivalent OR mutually exclusive. Hamilton and Jay had some very Liberal ideas and were among the first abolitionists.
Again, Liberalism is not socialism or communism. It is not anarchy or majoritarianism. If one wishes to see some Classical Liberalism, click on the reply called Madison and Jefferson.
Really, Democrats should be ashamed of themselves and I wonder how many of us real Liberals can hold out on the fringe. Or do I have it completely wrong?
Well, I won't say that the whole Democratic Party is killing
the liberal tradition, rather the far-left base elements, which unfortunately have far too much influence. Also, I don't see the GOP claiming the liberal tradition anytime soon.
Although, let's not forget that over a century ago, the GOP basically was the liberal party.
"In the world you will find tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Who are
the real Liberal leaders? Lieberman had a good record. Yep, the GOP was once the Liberal Party and many Libertarians in the Republican Party do have Liberal views. I dare say Tully and Pat have some Liberal views. I might go as far as to speculate that some Republicans here have a few more Liberal views than some Democratic leaders, which is why I listed some Modern Liberal attributes, lest we forget the last sixty years.
And what better way to make Democrats think than to point out the illiberal direction they are going? When Democrats on the stump move more towards the Liberal center, they are blasted and polls do not confirm a healthy Liberal pulse in the Party right now. Hell, you guys point out Democratic illiberality every other day. What does it matter many Democrats are Liberals if the Left can pull them towards the results THEY seek?
Anyway, I don't want to distract further from Tully's thread about fairness, though I do appreciate the fairness of letting me take an aside on Liberalism.
Hey, Max...
When I'm running for office one day here in Louisiana, please don't tell the voters that I have "Liberal" views!
;-)
(But of course I know how you are using the Word and thank you for the compliment.)
You would have my vote
v an Illiberal or social conservative. Is the term Liberal so tarnished that Republicans refrain from identifying their Liberal views for fear of attack from the Right? Who now supports my list more, Democrats or Republicans? You know, if you all made a better case for defending many Liberal values, you would win Independents and some Liberals. Oopss, you already have, here on the internet without using the term. I can see it now on Fox, the new home for Liberals. LOL The days of pitting Conservatism against Liberalism are fading. Maybe when more Republicans realize they're fighting Illiberalism, it might be easier to assert Liberal principles in the open.
I guess my conflation was "at what point might Republicans champion Liberal values seeing that many ALREADY take them to heart?" Or is the word presently useless to Republicans given the discourse and the power of the Republican base?
Uh-oh....conflation.......
Among "conservatives"
Among "conservatives" (whatever that means), "liberal" is an epithet, and always will be. It is perhaps unfortunate, but I don't think anybody's going to be able to reclaim the word for a long time. In today's political environment, to be a "liberal" is to be a "card-carrying member of the ACLU.
And divergence, as well
Got anything to say about the actual efforts to beat up on "conservative" media outlets using government-forced programming?
Short answer?
It's illiberal, unConstitutional and smacks of a Leftist agenda to force upon private citizens what the Left thinks is a balanced and fair media.
If Media Matters is the guide to fairness and truth, we are in deep crap. Perhaps Kerry is still hurting from the Swift-Boating. Washington was hit with much worse and kept his dignity and wits till the end.
Nope, nothing new...
convergence regained
Newt
He said essentially the same thing last night on Fox.
FDR had a two-state
FDR had a two-state Palestinian policy? Astounding, Max.
In any case, arguments over the nature of the "liberal" label can go elsewhere. It's topic conflation. Feel free to substitute whatever single-word label you prefer in place of that writer's use of "liberal."
The topic is the urge on the part of the left to gain governmental power over overtly political broadcast content. Which urge seems to be motivated by their views being repudiated in the commercial marketplace.
Conflation or context?
You know I did not mean FDR called for a two-state solution. I was condensing a bit of time. The word Liberal came up and I felt it was a good place to place Modern Liberalism against what Democrats today are pushing. FDR wasn't particularly Mr. Affirmative action or an environmentalist. You're being nit-picking and surely understand the point I was making, conflation or not.
Wasn't that a "FAIR" review of modern Liberalism? And doesn't such Liberalism point out the direction the Left is going while calling itself Liberal? Part of the game Democrats are playing is their use of the word Liberal. And one can't use the word illiberal in a meaningful way without defining Liberal. Has anyone done that?
I'm sorry if I wobbled the thread. I thought the interjection was reasonable and now I can call Kerry illiberal with some broader, historical context. Yes?
"Authoritarian" isn't the
"Authoritarian" isn't the most accurate swipe at progressives; "nanny-statism" is much better. The state's job is to make sure no feelings are hurt, that everybody eats their vegetables, and that everything is generally fair.
The authoritarian insult can be much better directed at the modern Republican party.
Quibbling--what's in a name?
Momentary CPD™-debunking digression:
The paternalism of the "so-con" right is no less (and certainly no more) authoritarian than the "nanny-statism" of the left, reducing either to mere labelling. Both seek to constrain liberty and promote state power over the individual, both claim benevolent motives and higher goods in so doing. Both contain the assumption that the motivation of the would-be guardians is the good of the governed in part or whole, a very dubious claim at best. The real motivation however is clearly power, manifested as self-serving elitism in action, internally justified by the egos of the would-be guardians. "We know what's good for you, better than you do."
When you travel full circle around the political spectrum, left meets right on the backside in the land called totalitarian. Where it matters not one whit what the stated justifications are, as the practical result is precisely the same.
So yes indeedy, "authoritarian" is an extremely accurate swipe at "progressives" in this case. That others can also manifest authoritarianism in their power plays does not reduce that in the least.
Nice one -CPD
You have converted the theory of relativity into politics nicely Tully. Political space IS curved by the gravity of human behavior and the two polar extremes meet full circle at politic's backside. Well said, though sometimes children need a bit of parenting to keep Tom from poking Fred's eyes out, or burning down the house.
P.S. trademarks require high usage. Have you been THAT busy?
Wasn't me, Max, I'm just
Wasn't me, Max, I'm just restating what has been obvious since before I was born. Namely that the political spectrum has more than one dimension, and "line" descriptions are inadequate.
I have used CPD™ as a descriptive for the last few years. Should I ever figure out how to realistically collect off of those who use CPD™ without my permission, I'll be rich. Rich, I tell you! Bwa ha ha ha ha!
