New clauses for the Contract with America

Submitted by Pat on Fri, 11/10/2006 - 1:55pm

I posted early Wednesday morning my Prescription for a Republican Future, outlining the steps I think the GOP must take in order to retake the Congress in 2008. Now our friend Fern at Alone in Public is starting a meme about what specifics should be in the New Contract with America, and she wants our input. Her nominees are: school choice, a balanced budget, and tax reform.

I'll agree with those (though I think tax reform ain't happening anytime soon), and add these.

  • Make all health insurance premiums and health care expenses deductible, whether paid by the employer or the employee
  • Support President Bush's proposal to allow small businesses to pool together to purchase health insurance for their employees
  • Stop subsidizing prescription drugs for Canada, Europe, and other developed nations
  • Replace the ineffective and speech-stifling bureaucracy of campaign finance "reform" with immediate full disclosure of all campaign contributions via the internet
  • Increase the transparency of the legislative process with earmark reform and eliminating anonymous Senate "holds" on nominations and legislation

That should do for a start. Anybody else?
