Conflict of interest?

If you're a network - let's say MSNBC - and an anchor for one of your political shows announces that s/he's running for federal office, presumably you are obliged to cut them loose if they don't resign of their own volition. If they are merely considering doing so, as Chris Matthews is reported to be, and, indeed, are staffing up, at what point does the network's ethical obligation to terminate the anchor attach?

I'd just be happy if networks acknowledged that they do have an ethical obligation to disassociate with a political operative, be it a candidate, someone preparing to run, or someone working on a political campaign or for a political office.

But how would they function....

But, given how much effort the entire MSM put into electing Obama, how would they function with 90%+ of their staff and such "disassociated?"
