The Blue Dog Bounce

Submitted by Tully on Thu, 10/26/2006 - 12:40pm

The conventional wisdom is that a Democratic takeover of the House would lead to radical-liberal politics holding sway. Certainly those slated for committee chairmanships don't exactly cluster towards the political center. But not so fast....

A right kind of Democrat: GOP-held House seats are threatened by a crop of conservative foes

He is pro-business and antiabortion. He is an evangelical Christian and an avid hunter. But, unexpectedly, Heath Shuler is a Democrat, and he is running for Congress in North Carolina. Shuler is part of a phalanx of unusually conservative Democratic candidates who may deliver crucial victories over GOP incumbents and help their party win control of the House.

The crux of the article is that many or most of those Democrats in position to take seats away from the GOP aren't left-liberal Democrats, but moderate/centrist ones, even conservatives.

While the prospect of the return of the Blue Dog Democrats and new life in the DLC faction may drive partisan wingers (on both sides!) to drink and despair, for the rest of us a move towards the middle after several years on the wings is a good thing.
